FAQ

This page contains answers to common questions handled by our support staff, along with some tips and tricks that we have found useful and presented here as questions. These are for multiple types of registers. If you do not find what you are looking for please go to the service request form and let us know how to help you.

   How ... ?

How is the display contrast adjusted: The display is too light or too dark -- ?
The display contrast control is located on the right side of the register near the front of the register. Some registers have their display controls as a keyboard function, this is usually done by pressing the page up or down keys while in register mode. Check your manual for more information.

How long does the battery last when the power is off?
Register memory (totals and program data) will be retained for approximately 60 days when the battery is fully charged (24 hours). Battery life is approximately 3 years.

How can a received on account (R/A) or paid out (P/O) transaction be voided?
They can not. However, you can perform a received on account transaction to adjust media totals after an incorrect paid out. Conversely, you could perform a paid out transaction to adjust media totals after and incorrect received on account.

How can time clock entries be entered manually if an employee forgets to punch in or out?
Clerk In/Out is found on the X-mode or Program mode menu. From the X-mode screen choose the Time clock edit option. From the P-Mode screen, press PAGE DOWN, and then press 00 for MORE. Select the first option 00 CLERK I/O. You will be prompted to enter the clerk number, and then the last time punches for the clerk can be edited. Once a Z-1 (daily) time report is generated, the last punches are cleared, and times may no longer be edited.

How can I change the tax rate or prices and descriptors in the register?

If you have your manual available you can look up the basic program changes. If you do not have a manual available, you can usually purchase one or you can talk to one of our programmers for a nominal programming fee.

How do UPC codes get into a scanner?

Actually, they are programmed into the cash register either manually or with a software application. Once they are in the register, the scanner just reads the code off of the product and translates the information to the cash register.

How can you avoid paper jams?

Always fold paper before inserting into printer to help prevent “loading” paper jams. This is not for all printers, if using 2-ply paper it may bog down the printer. Always follow instructions in manual or those placed inside the printer compartment.

    Where can I find ... ?

Where can I find the appropriate tax rate for my store?

The best thing to do is to check with the tax department for the city and county that your business is located in. They will be able to tell you the appropriate tax rate for your location and type of business.

Where can I find paper, ink cartridges or keys for my cash register system?

CRC carries a complete line of paper, ink cartridges and keys for most of the major brands of cash registers. Remember when shopping for paper, compare the price of paper by the feet per roll. Rolls with 125’ & 195’ may look the same due to the way the rolls are wound. Also look at bond weight, cheaper paper may leave dust or little pieces of paper behind causing jams, thus shortening the life of the printer. You may be paying more for that bargain paper than you think!

    Why ... ?

Why am I unable to delete PLUs from the register?
You must Z-out PLU sales data from Z1 and Z2 before a PLU can be deleted.

Why does the register error when attempting to clock in?
The register will maintain punch in/out records for 10 work sessions. Once the 20 time punches are recorded then the records are full and additional time records will not be accepted. The ER-650/655 timekeeping system was designed to be cleared (Z1 time report) on a daily basis.

Why does the "Not Allowed With Open Orders" message display when attempting a Z report?
You must pay all open checks for tracks 1-4 before running a Z report.
If you have paid all checks and the message still blocks Z reports, it may be due to a unreported check with a zero balance (there are unique circumstances where this may happen.) You must change the P-Mode System Option, Report Option #15 'Allow Z With Open Orders' to Y(es). You are now allowed to access the Z reports area. Be sure to reset check track 1-4 before returning the option flag to N(o).

Why does the message "OVER-LIMIT" display when attempting to clock in or out?
Five in/out punches are kept per employee per day. Once five in/out punches are recorded, the "OVER-LIMIT" message will display. The correct procedure is to generate a Time Keeping End of Day report each day. When the report is completed, daily records are cleared and new in/out punches can be recorded.

    What is ... ?

What is age verification and where is it programmed?
Age verification is a feature that requires the operator to enter the customers date of birth before selected items can be registered. Items are linked to age verification categories in group programming.

What are the differences between hard and soft check?
With a soft check system the entire check -- including items -- is saved in memory. Only the check balance is kept in the register's memory when a hard check system is implemented.

What is the difference between timekeeping and signing on to operate the register?
Clerk time keeping is a standard feature of the ER-650. Clerks can clock in and clock out at any time, regardless of whether they are signed on to operate the register. (Clocking in and clocking out are separate functions from signing on or signing off to operate the register.)

What is Electronic Journal?
The electronic journal captures in memory what you would print line by line on a traditional journal. This is stored electronically in the register so that you can print it out at the end of the day if needed.

What are the advantages of an electronic journal vs. a printed journal?
Besides, the convenience, one of the primary advantages of using the ER-650/655 electronic journal is the sorting options capability. If you wish to check the journal for a specific transaction, you can search the journal and print for example, only canceled transactions, or only transactions involving a specific clerk.
